In Year 7 and 8 all pupils receive one hour a week of music in the curriculum. In Year 9 pupils have the opportunity to continue with music, before then choosing it as a GCSE subject. Currently there are more than 50 GCSE musicians at Ryedale School.
In the past three years, our GCSE A*-C pass rate is 97%, and our A*-A pass rate is 70%.
Ryedale School has also provided A-Level music tuition for other local schools in the past three years. Last year's results were:
Year 13 - A*-C 100%
Year 12 - A-C 89%
Students gained places at the following Universities to read music: Durham, Newcastle, Sheffield and Leeds College of Music. One student gained a choral scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford, finding time to sing between reading for a Physics degree!
The curriculum in Year 7-9 is fundamentally about enjoying music through performing and composing, and provides an excellent platform for GCSE and A-Level music. We follow the EDEXCEL/Pearson syllabus for both GCSE and A-Level.
We have first-rate equipment and class spaces for all year groups, including a keyboard and PC workstation each in our main classroom, with Cubase and Sibelius software to aid composing and performing, four practice rooms and a fully-equipped recording studio.
